Postpartum kicked my ass.
I gave birth at 38 — and honestly, it felt like I aged another 10 years overnight. My skin was dull, my hair fell out in clumps, and I was so tired and dazed I could barely form a sentence. I didn’t feel radiant or glowing — I felt gray. Dry. Depleted. Unrecognizable.
If you’ve felt this too, you’re not alone. This guide is for every mom who’s in the thick of postpartum recovery and wondering, “When do I start to feel like myself again?” — and how to actually achieve a real postpartum glow-up.
The Postpartum Crash: Why It Happens
Your body goes through an intense transformation in pregnancy and childbirth, and the fourth trimester is no joke. Pumping quite literally sucked the life out of me. Hormone levels plummet after birth — especially estrogen and progesterone, which can trigger:
- Hair loss (peaks around 3–4 months postpartum)
- Dry skin and breakouts
- Fatigue, brain fog, mood swings
- Nutrient depletion (especially iron, B12, omega-3s, and magnesium)
On top of that, you’re feeding a baby, probably not sleeping, and maybe forgetting to eat anything besides half a granola bar. If you want tips on what to eat to support your milk supply while keeping your energy up, check out my post on pumping support and nutrition.
My Postpartum Glow-Up Plan (That Actually Helped)
Here’s what helped me start to look and feel human again — and yes, everything listed below is either safe while breastfeeding or has a note to double-check with your provider.
1. Magnesium Changed Everything
What I use: Doctor’s Best Magnesium Glycinate
If I could only recommend one thing, it would be this. I started taking magnesium at night and I swear, within a week I felt less wired but tired, less anxious, and more stable. It helps with sleep, stress, constipation, and energy — all things that go sideways postpartum.
Safe while breastfeeding? Yes — magnesium is considered safe and often encouraged.
Quick tip: Start with 200–400 mg at night and see how your body responds.
2. Hair Loss SOS for Your Postpartum Glow-Up: Rosemary Shampoo
Check out this guide for more info on why postpartum hair loss happens.
What helped:
- Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Hair Strengthening Biotin Shampoo
- Mielle Organics Rosemary & Mint Hair Oil, Split Ends & Dry Scalp Treatment
- Wide-tooth comb + patience
I applied rosemary oil to my scalp a few nights a week and washed with gentle shampoo every few days. This stuff is a fantastic dupe for Bondiboost. You won’t stop the shedding overnight, but it does slow down. Around 6–9 months postpartum, baby hairs started growing back.
Extra glow-up tips for hair:
- Massage scalp 5 minutes nightly to stimulate growth
- Sleep on a silk pillowcase to reduce breakage
- Trim damaged ends every 8–12 weeks
Safe while breastfeeding? Yes — rosemary oil is generally safe when used topically in moderation.
3. Supplements That Helped Replenish Me
- Vitamin D + K2 (especially if you’re indoors a lot)
- Omega-3 (DHA + EPA) – supports your brain and your baby’s development
- Postnatal multivitamin – like Needed or Ritual postpartum formulas
- Iron-rich foods or supplement – low iron = fatigue, hair loss, mood swings
Always check supplements with your provider — especially if you’re taking other meds or nursing.
4. Skin Glow: Enzyme Peels & Hydration to Jumpstart Your Postpartum Glow-Up
What I used:
- Gentle fruit enzyme peel (like Versed or Glow Recipe)
- Ceramide-rich moisturizer (CeraVe PM is great and budget-friendly)
- Hyaluronic acid serum under moisturizer
Hormonal skin can be so unpredictable — I was flaky, then oily, then gray. A once-a-week enzyme peel helped slough off dead skin without irritation. Moisture is key to getting your glow back.
Safe while breastfeeding? Most over-the-counter enzyme peels are safe — avoid strong retinoids or chemical peels without guidance.
5. Outside Time + Water + A Mirror
It sounds simple, but even five minutes outside each day changed my energy. I started drinking water in a cute tumbler and spent a few minutes looking at myself in the mirror. Brushing hair, adding mascara, or even tinted SPF helped me feel human again.
Postpartum glow-up ritual: Little habits matter. Pick one small thing every day to reconnect with yourself.
Other Tips I Loved From Other Moms:
- Collagen powder (safe for most, supports hair/skin/nails)
- Scalp massage brushes
- Dry brushing before showering (helps circulation & lymphatic drainage)
- High-protein smoothies (easy to prep, great for blood sugar and hair growth)
- Makeup bag refresh — clean mascara, brow gel, and a tinted balm can go a long way
- Light stretching or daily walks
It’s Okay If You Don’t Feel Glowy Yet
The postpartum glow-up doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes, it’s one tiny habit at a time. If you’re still in the thick of it, I see you. You are healing, and you will feel like yourself again — maybe even better, stronger, and wiser than before.
